Practice The Ancient Art of Tai Chi

Printer-Friendly Format

The gentle 2,000-year old Chinese practice of Tai Chi is often described as "meditation in motion." But the Harvard Women's Health Watch newsletter suggests a more apt description of "medication in motion."

Tai chi has so many advantages including promoting flexibility, balance, cardiovascular fitness, and strength. Benefits have also been found for pain, stress, anxiety, and arthritis. Do find a good teacher (with 10 years or more of experience) since there is a subtle point of avoiding knee stress.

How many times a week should you practice? A minimum of once- or twice-weekly sessions for 8 to 12 weeks may suffice to see benefits. No pain, big gains.

As always, consult your health of medical professional for any questions, and proper instructions.
