Mind Hack: Drink Less Alcohol and Have Stronger Bones
Do you feel that you may be having one too many inebriants every week? Heavy drinkers (those that drink 2 to 3 ounces per day) are more likely to suffer from a host of health problems including osteoporosis, peripheral neuropathy, liver disease, and yes, even erectile dysfunction. Excess alcohol also prevents osteoblasts (i.e., the cells that create bone matter) from doing their jobs, and increases cortisol levels in the body. It's difficult to deny yourself something, especially when you've had a long and grueling work week, or feel the need to "de-stress" from your life. And with summer BBQs just around the corner, how do we deal with drinking less? Some researchers suggest a mental paradigm shift is all you need. So instead of thinking "no to alcohol," think "yes to healthy bones." Some people drink alcohol also because they feel socially awkward, anxious, and insecure in a party situation. To alleviate this, act like you're the co-host, and befriend some people. Lose the focus on yourself, and make sure everyone is having a great time. Another method is to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic fluids, like holding a glass of ginger ale or virgin margarita. Follow some of these tips, and your bones will thank you in the long run! As always, consult your health or medical professional for any questions, and proper advice.
